Off Cabo, marine scientists tagged a big Humboldt recently, and sent it down to the depths with a movie camera. While it was fascinating to see other humboldts checking out the camera(feeling it with tentacles, nipping at it with beaks)-the camera caught sight of a monster at 1000 feet. After taking the film to experts(unassociated with the film) the beast in the background was measured, because the glow of its eye was supposedly(several meters) from the tentacles, which were over a foot around. The math then done put this "thing" at over 100 feet long.
An archituthus was feeding on the smaller squid. So between that and the Japanese off the Bonins a year ago, we're getting the first real pics (And movies)of the giant squid ALIVE.
