Sometimes people politely correct my pronunciation by using the word that I mispronounced a little later in the conversation, but pronouncing it correctly. I appreciate their tact. I would then try to re-use the word, but pronouncing it correctly the second time around. Then later I check the dictionary.

Most people say "for-TAY" when forte is just "fort" according to the dictionary. My solution is to never use that word, because the proper pronunciation is too far gone to bring it back with normal pronunciation. I suspect that one of these days the dictionary will allow the common mispronounciation.
