Re: octopuses.. no octopi, no wait..
Tue, August 1, 2006 - 2:36 AMthe way i understand it, octopuses is the correct scientific term, whereas octopi is socially recognized as the grammatically correct one. -
-
Re: octopuses.. no octopi, no wait..
Tue, August 1, 2006 - 10:04 AMoctopi is grammatically incorrect because it confuses greek and latin.
nobody (outside of cephgeeks) wants to hear it tho. they also refuse don't want to hear that octopuses have arms, not tentacles....
oh, the burdens of trying to educate people! -

Re: octopuses.. no octopi, no wait..
Wed, August 2, 2006 - 11:12 PMDon't get me wrong, I agree wholeheartedly; "octopuses" is the correct term to use. However i hear "octopi" more than "octopuses", which leads me to believe that it is the more socially recognized term. -

Re: octopuses.. no octopi, no wait..
Thu, August 3, 2006 - 12:43 AMbut that still makes it incorrect.. it's like people saying "miss-cheev-ee-us" when there is no way to pronounce that word "mischievous" like that and be correct. -
-
Re: octopuses.. no octopi, no wait..
Thu, August 3, 2006 - 2:57 AM*sigh* i'm agreeing with you.

Thu, August 3, 2006 - 11:50 AMoh, and my point is just that we ought to spread the word (without being pedants) so that people stop saying the wrong damn word! ;) -

Re: octopuses.. no octopi, no wait..
Sun, October 15, 2006 - 10:18 PMIf we all said "octopuses" a lot, maybe we could effect change in society.
Sometimes people politely correct my pronunciation by using the word that I mispronounced a little later in the conversation, but pronouncing it correctly. I appreciate their tact. I would then try to re-use the word, but pronouncing it correctly the second time around. Then later I check the dictionary.
Most people say "for-TAY" when forte is just "fort" according to the dictionary. My solution is to never use that word, because the proper pronunciation is too far gone to bring it back with normal pronunciation. I suspect that one of these days the dictionary will allow the common mispronounciation. -

-
Re: octopuses.. no octopi, no wait..
Sun, October 15, 2006 - 2:43 PMI say "octopodes."
Also, "platypodes."
-pus is Greek, and the plural of -pus is -podes. -

Re: octopuses.. no octopi, no wait..
Sun, October 15, 2006 - 3:33 PMyou are the most correct one linguistically. since all of the teuthologists say "octopuses", I defer to them. and after CIAC I got to meet them from all over the world and they all use the same plural, even tho it is technically incorrect (but less incorrect than mixing up the latin and greek) -
-
