While it was fascinating to see other humboldts checking out the camera(feeling it with tentacles, nipping at it with beaks)-the camera caught sight of a monster at 1000 feet. After taking the film to experts(unassociated with the film) the beast in the background was measured, because the glow of its eye was supposedly(several meters) from the tentacles, which were over a foot around. The math then done put this "thing" at over 100 feet long.
An archituthus was feeding on the smaller squid. So between that and the Japanese off the Bonins a year ago, we're getting the first real pics (And movies)of the giant squid ALIVE.

Now, four years after receiving that degree, I've come to my senses and am back in school, taking various math and science classes that are required for admission into the Ocean Science/Marine Science grad school programs that I have my eye on.

I'm interested in hearing about the education and career paths of any members of the tribe who are lucky enough to receive a paycheck for working with cephalopods...or of anyone who's tried to do so. Any words of advice or warning for someone with lofty aspirations? (I haven't narrowed my aspirations down enough to know exactly what I'm trying to do, but I'm sure that when I figure it out, they'll be lofty.)

Friday, June 29, 2007 11:35 AM HST

NELHA pumps up the creature from 3,000 feet

by Bobby Command
Stephens Media
As denizens of the deep go, it isn't very intimidating.

But local scientists are nevertheless fascinated with the tentacled creature that was sucked up to the surface Tuesday by the 55-inch deep sea pipeline at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.

"It's kind of an 'octosquid,'" said Jan War, operations manager at NELHA at Keahole Point. "It's got the body of a squid but the eight tentacles of an octopus."

The foot-long "octosquid" was rescued alive from a filter at the end of the pipeline, which each minutes brings up to 5,000 gallons of 39-degree Fahrenheit sea water from a depth of 3,000 feet.

Along with the brownish-red octosquid, which does not have the long club tentacles normally seen on the type of mollusks known as cephalopods, NELHA officials also on Tuesday extracted three grayish-black rat-tail fish and four satellite jellyfish.

While the smallest of the rat-tail fish was still alive -- until the octosquid made a meal of it -- the other creatures were dead. War said the fish that come up the NELHA pipeline quickly die or are already dead because the change in atmospheric pressure expands and eventually ruptures a fish's swim bladders.

But invertebrates -- animals with no backbones -- are seemingly unaffected by the pressure change. The light may have bothered the octosquid, though, since it is pitch black at the 3,000-foot depth. War said the exceptionally clear waters off Keahole Point allow light from the sun to penetrate to about 500 and 600 feet.

War, who fed the octosquid shrimp for breakfast Wednesdaymorning, said everyone was excited because it was still alive. "And we're also excited because we may have found a new species."

University of Hawaii scientists are also interested in the octosquid.

"It's a gorgeous animal," said Christopher D. Kelley, program biologist for the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory. "I want to say I've seen one, but I need to pass this one on to an expert for more examination."

To get down 3,000 feet, you have to go about a mile and a half off Keahole Point. War, who has inspected the pipelines intakes in a submersible owned by the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory, said the bottom is mostly rubble and sediment.

"The slope is a lot like Hualalai at 30 percent," War said. "There's a fair share of life down there -- mostly things suspended. But you also see things swimming around."

Kelley said Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory has a database of everything it has videotaped since it began the deep-sea dives in the 1980s, but there is so much that has yet to be discovered at those depths.

"We have one starfish-like creature that we can't even get the phylum (a primary division in the animal kingdom)," he said. "We've just labeled it 'animal.'"

War said there's a 40-inch pipeline, which brings water up from the 2,000-foot depth, that seems to produce different types of sea creatures. "You don't get these jellys in the 2,000-foot pipeline," he said. "I don't know if that means they stay deeper, or they just happened to be migrating through that area when they were caught."

Eventually, NELHA would like to put some of the benthic creatures out for display, but it takes an 8-ton crane to pull the filter out of the pump shaft, so cleaning is a major operation. "We'd like to find some way to do it more often," he said. "We pulled the skeleton of a fish out of there once, and we'd like to have seen what that was."

Kelley, who said he is also interested in the satellite jellyfish, said he's willing to take any of the animals that NELHA can't use or display.

"I hope they keep calling us when they get them," he said. "Needless to say, trips by humans to that depth are rare, so we're very interested in anything they come up with."

Hey all- in my teachings aboard a museumship in L.A. I gather stories from WWII vets and publish them in the ship's newspaper. A couple of years back I met a Navy Blimp crewman, who flew out of Bermuda on anti sub and convoy missions. We talked about geek stuff for an hour until he mentioned a rescue at sea. A tanker had been torpedoed off Bermuda, and most everyone survived-all in a 40 foot life boat. They survivied torpedoing, and sharks.. but what happened next is described in Benchley's "The Beast". Over a three night period they were preyed on by an Archituthus. Something sixty or so feet long. Two nights in a row it took crewman right out of the boat. The third night they hacked at it with knives, spanked it with paddles, and shot it with a flaregun, finally driving it off. They were rescued by the blimp the next day.
SO this guys sez to me; "they had chunks of it in the boat and gave one to my skipper. I think he still has it."
Thought you'd enjoy that.
Finally we see one alive! Something older than dinosaurs! Sorry Coelocanth, take a backseat!

LONDON (Reuters) - Japanese scientists have taken the first photographs of one of the most mysterious creatures in the deep ocean -- the giant squid.

Until now the only information about the behavior of the creatures which measure up to 18 meters (59 feet) in length has been based on dead or dying squid washed up on shore or captured in commercial fishing nets.

But Tsunemi Kubodera, of the National Science Museum, and Kyoichi Mori of the Ogasawara Whale Watching Association, both in Tokyo have captured the first images of Architeuthis attacking bait 900 meters (yards) below the surface in the cold, dark waters of the North Pacific.

"We show the first wild images of a giant squid in its natural environment," they said in a report on Wednesday in the journal Proceedings B of the Royal Society.

Little is known about the creatures because it has been so difficult to locate and study them alive. Large ships and specialist equipment, which is costly, are needed to study deep sea environments.

The Japanese scientists found the squid by following sperm whales, the most effective hunters of giant squid, as they gathered to feed between September and December in the deep waters off the coast of the Ogasawara Islands in the North Pacific.

They used a remote long-line camera and depth logging system to capture the giant squid in the ocean depths.

"The most dramatic character of giant squids is the pair of extremely long tentacles, distinct from the eight shorter arms. The long tentacles make up to two-thirds of the length of the dead specimens to date," the scientists said in the journal.

They added that the giant squid appear to be a much more active predator than researchers had suspected and tangled their prey in their elongated feeding tentacles.
http://www.newsisfree.com/iclick/i,68901859,1439,f/
All is fair in love and war, but some animals take it to the extreme by temporarily turning themselves into something they're not. Findings published today in the journal Nature provide two new examples of how these mimics can get ahead.
The mating scene for giant Australian cuttlefish (Sepia apama) is rife with fighting and deception. Small males often scoop their much larger counterparts by pretending to be female themselves, which allows the runts to get closer to females of reproductive age. "In the blink of an eye they can pull out of it and go back to being a male," observes lead author Roger Hanlon of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. But although researchers had observed this behavior in the wild, it was unclear how successful the male mimics were at actually fertilizing females. Hanlon and his colleagues studied the creatures in their natural habitat and used DNA fingerprinting to analyze eggs and calculate the mimics' success rates. According to the report, the female impersonators fertilized female fish in 60 percent of their attempts, a success rate about twice that of honest male cuttlefish.

second report by researchers at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, U.K., details a new example of mimicry in vertebrates, which usually lack the ability to switch appearances. Isabelle M. Cote and Karen L. Cheney found that the bluestriped fangblenny fish (Plagiotremus rhinorhynchos) is an exception and can turn its disguise on and off at will. By pretending to be a bluestreak cleaner fish (Labroides dimidiatus--an animal that helps other species by removing parasites--the fangblenny then ambushes its prey. Although the physiological basis of the animals' color changes is not yet understood, the scientists found that rapid shifts in hue are possible and that the fish can maintain the different appearance for several hours. This flexibility is beneficial because if there are no cleaner fish to impersonate, the fangblenny fish can revert to its signature blue stripe, which allows the creature to blend in better with the surroundings. --Sarah Graham"

I am carving a series of cephalopod tiles in clay. I've finished a blue-ringed octopus and a striped-pyjama squid. I'm in the middle of a pair of nautiluses (nautili?). I want to do an argonaut.

What I figured I'd do was, cast the shell and carve the animal. A bit of a cheat, but it's a bit trickier than a simple nautilus shell.

I had a small Argonauta hians shell that I cast as an experiment. The process destroyed the shell, as I knew it would. But the result was splendid. The shell is largely protein, with a structure very like most gastropods' operculums, so it softens when wet. This makes it release easily from the plaster.

The thing is, to keep the size consistent with the rest of the series, I need a shell, or shells, that are about 80-90mm. My test shell was half that size. I need a bigger one, or two. It does NOT have to be a perfect shell, as long as one side is in good shape.

Hians tend to be the most common, so least expensive. But they don't often get very big. Probably the next affordable would be nodosa. All the other species get into more money than I can afford, let alone bear to sacrifice for this project.

I've scoped out shell dealers on the internet. The nearest one who has what I need at a price I can afford is in Brasil.

So if any of you has an argonaut shell you'd be willing to part with, I would be interested in buying it, or perhaps you'd like to swap for some ceph tiles? They'd make for a killer bathroom or kitchen backsplash.
